Customizing your floppy hat

While looking for customized floppy hats this past week, I was surprised to find very few tutorials on how to make them. I was in turn, flooded with ads trying to sell me customized floppy hats via Etsy and Shein.

I had already invested in two white floppy hats from Target, hoping to create some Cricut magic, so I decided to give it a try. My initial idea was to try and use both HTV (heat transfer vinyl) and vinyl. But I quickly learned that vinyl would not stick to the hat material (90% Paper, 10% Polyester).

For this tutorial you could use any floppy hat or summer hat with a space for the words. You can find “ladies fashion summer sun hats” at the dollar store, for only one dollar, which would make this project even more affordable.

You will also need your Cricut machine, measuring tape, an iron, HTV and Cricut tools.

Ready, Set, Go…
Measure the length and width of your area

Start by measuring the area in which you will be placing your words. This will ensure you create a word/phrase that will fit nicely.

Now, it’s time to decide on the phrase or word you would like on your hat. We went back and forth between different options:

-Fun in the Sun -Mermaid in Training -It’s always sunny in Florida

-“names” – Vacay mode -Pool all day -Beach all day

Once we made a decision (what felt like 7 hours later), we used the Cricut Design Space to make the letters/words

We loaded the machine and the cutting magic happened right before our eyes.

Make sure to use your tools to cut and weed the letters/words.

Measure the center

After you are done, you will need to measure again to make sure you position all the words before ironing them. Measuring is not my favorite, but a necessary step to ensure correct placement.

After you have carefully placed the words, use the iron to apply heat and seal them in place. Be careful not to burn it, but apply enough heat to ensure it will stick.
